Decorative Ladder Chair

20140507-165047.jpg

I saw these on “Studio 5”. I made mine a bit bigger so the cutting is not as easy and you would need more boards to make it bigger and more screws to make as stable as the smaller one shown on the show. You can visit the link below for step-by-step instructions with pictures and easy cutting.

You can see how to make and assemble them at West Creek Design

Larger Decorative Ladder Chair

Supplies Needed:

(I had Home Depot cut my Cedar Fencing/Slats into pieces but you can cut them if you have a miter saw etc…)

*you will need (9) – 66 inch long Cedar Dog Eared Fencing/Slats: Use 2 dog eared cedar fence slats cut 60 inches long each for the back/legs of ladder, 7 of the dog eared fencing/slats are for ladder “steps” and bracing (do not use the dog eared end, cut straight, you could use straight cedar fencing/slats I couldn’t find any of that type of fencing).

Cutting Ladder “Steps” and Bracing Board Pieces:

Cut (12) board pieces for ladder “Steps” and bracing, 16 inches long (you can chisel 4 of the back ladder pieces to look more rustic).

Cutting Front Legs and Seat Board Pieces:

Cut (7) -19 inch long pieces for the seat and legs (5 for the seat, and then one of them chiseled/split in half and using only 1 of the chiseled slat pieces, 2 for legs (7 pieces in-all) see picture below.

*Chisel for splitting wood, optional but I used it to make my chairs

*Sandpaper for sanding slats before and after painting

*1 inch Wood Screws, use as many as needed to secure each wood piece

*1 inch Nails, used for extra needed support or to secure splits in the wood if needed

*Hammer

*1 can Gray Spray Paint, spray spots and rub in on wood on random spots on finished put-together decorative chair, and let dry before rubbing on stain

*Wood Stain, color of your choice I used a Walnut Stain, allow to dry and sand as needed to achieve weathered look desired

*Rags to rub in gray spray paint and apply stain

*Plastic/latex Disposable Gloves

Assembling:

I started by laying the two 60 inch long slats/fencing on ground and start putting on the “ladder steps”, coming down about 9 inches and then add 16 inch slats about every 5 -5 1/2 inches or desired space. Screw them into place.

Then measure 3 inches from the bottom of the 60 inch slats and add the 16 inch back leg support.

Building the front legs with support:

Use two of the 19 inch cut boards length wise next to each other and lay /add one of the 16 inch board pieces across the tops of legs, 3 inches from the bottom. Screw into place lining outer edges up with outer edge leg pieces. Line up with the two front legs with the top brace lining up the 16 inch board length wise onto the tops of the leg board pieces.

Lay the ladder section on its side and attach the front leg section with a 16 inch brace board piece (3 inches from the bottom of leg pieces lining up with the front base board piece) then add the top 16 inch brace board piece. Turn ladder to the other side and repeat on that side.

Then stand chair ladder upright and add the 5, 19 inch seat slats and then screw in all Slats in Decorative Ladder Chair with 1 inch screws.

Sand – Paint/Stain – Dry – Sand again if desired – Finished!!!

Note: I hope this makes good sense. Visit the above link if more help is needed to assemble.

Decorative Ladder Chair is for decorative purpose only!
