Winterizing Roses

20131111-201637.jpg

It’s that time of year to winterize roses. I usually winterize my roses around Halloween but I’m a little late this year.

I used 1/4 cup of Muriate of Potash and 1/4 cup of Magnesium Sulfate and sprinkled it around the base of each rose shrub and water in well. If your roses are zone hardy for your area you shouldn’t need to cover up your roses. That being said in Utah are weather is so crazy I cover mine up anyway.

I don’t prune my roses until Spring. You can visit how to prune roses here.

There are other materials you could use to wrap roses but this is what I’ve chosen to use, Plastic Rose Collars. I’ve used potting soil to cover up the base of the roses but you could also use  soil building compost, see the link below. I like to pile up the potting soil about 4 to 5 inches but 12 inches is better for roses not for your zone and then put the leaves on top of the potting soil. The Rose collars are used to keep leaves and potting soil in place.

This is how I’ve covered up my roses for the past 8 years and it has worked well but I’ve still have lost a few roses. There is so many reasons you could lose roses.

You can see more about roses here. and here.

My Maple trees have bark splitting issues in the winter from Sunscald, so I like to wrap them with a white tree wrap. You can find out more information about tree bark splitting here.

Freezing Garden Jalapeño Peppers

20131025-134719.jpg

These are the Jalapeños from our garden. I grew them in pots and then when the weather got to the freezing point I brought them into the garage. I picked them all at once so that I could freeze them.

Jalapeños

*jalapenos, washed
*a pair of Gloves
*Pint Freezer Bags
*Permanent Marker

*Cut up Jalapeños, size of your choice wearing the gloves, being very careful not to touch your eyes or face. (A seed flipped on my face and yes it does burn.)
You might want to also wear glasses to protect your eyes from juices that may squirt out of the peppers. Remove the seeds if you don’t like them really hot.

Place the cut Jalapeños in Pint size Freezer bags and remove as much air as possible and then place the pint size bags into one gallon size bag, label and freeze. (I just grabbed a handful of the cut Jalapeños for each bag guessing it to be about 4 medium Jalapeños.)

You can use them in Sauces, Salsas, and etc….
